A Sheffield ski village which burned down five years ago is set to be transformed into a new £22.5 million development. The now derelict village once produced some of Britain’s most successful Winter Olympians including Katie Summerhayes, James Machon and James Woods.
Leisure company, Extreme, has been announced as the lead developer on the project. The ski slopes are predicted to be redeveloped and ready to use as early as 2019. Indoor climbing walls, an outdoor mountain bike track and a snow sports centre are ideas that have been put forward for the 48 acre space. Hotels, bars, restaurants and shops will be built in various phases over the coming year.
Supporters of the redevelopment have proposed that the plans will help Sheffield maintain its title of the “Outdoor City”. The city council have said that the redevelopment could help to attract “thousands more visitors to the city”.
